Mindfulness and MBCT

Mindfulness may be described as a human capacity which can be trained and cultivated

  • to become fully aware of body sensations, perceptions, feelings , thoughts, impulses
  • as these arise in awareness in the present moment
  • and to do this with curiosity and kindness, without self judgment or criticism
  • so to be able to see clearly what is truly happening and to gain the capacity to respond in ways which serve one’s own best interest and the best interest of others.

MBCT is a scientifically validated deep dive into Mindfulness Meditation and Mindful Living.

.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a structured 8-week program that combines mindfulness meditation practices with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques.

Originally developed to help people break the cycle of recurrent depression, it has proven success in helping people with anxiety. By finding a new relationship with one’s own thoughts it may help people with many forms of chronic unhappiness and distress as well as become a path to increased self-awareness and insight.

MBCT is different from counseling and psychotherapy because it is an educational intervention based on experiential learning.

While beneficial for people with depressive or anxiety disorders many people who have no mental health diagnosis have found it beneficial.

What Can I Do For You?

I teach the eight week Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy course. (see course information for details).

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a structured, 8-week group program of experiential education that combines ancient mindfulness meditation with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques.

Participants meet weekly in closed group sessions (in person or on-line) for 2 to 2.5 hours for teaching and guided meditations, which are followed by group discussions to explore and learn from actual experiences.

“At home practice” between classes is supported by recorded guided meditations and printed material. There is a five to six hour “Day of Practice” usually on a weekend between class six and seven.

People who can’t commit to attendance on a regular weekly schedule for eight weeks may opt for self paced 1:1 instruction. This may serve the needs of those whose work schedules include shift changes, such as first responders, Doctors and Nurses, transportation and agricultural workers.

Although effective, this approach lacks the powerful benefits of group process experiential education.

Individual coaching and counseling is available to people who have completed a Mindfulness training such as MBCT or MBSR and seek support in applying Mindfulness to their own lives.

This is not psychotherapy in the usual sense, as the focus is on mindfulness practices and application through a person centred non-directive approach.

This may be in addition to traditional counseling or psychiatric care.

How Much Will It Cost Me?

You can Do It Yourself. I was a DIYer for more than 30 years, which may be why it took me so long to arrive where my path is now. See resources for some suggestions. When I began formal study to teach Mindfulness courses my own practice was amplified immeasurably. I suggest you take a course to build a strong foundation and grow from there. All my services are competitively priced, and on the Resources page I list other qualified providers.
